. chris, what was that shout out to john mccain and joe lieberman about? that seemed to make john mccain unhappy? >> he did his patented grimace smile. it was a standard cap and trade bill along the framework of what would later be passed by the house of representatives after president and killed in the senate because no republics republicans would support it. john mccain and joe lieberman in three sessions introduced bills to put a cap on carbon and that amount would have gone down year for year. what democrats tried to pass in 2009 and could not get done. it was a reminder to the republicans that there was a remarkable and in my time covering politics, lurch backwards. newt gingrich was haunted by sitting with nancy pelosi endorsing it. john mccain favored cap and trade. all of that has been undone and destroyed as the republican party has put this in this shrinking denial of the political strain. i think the president was trying to point that out and that's why john mccain felt uncomfortable. >> sitting between two democratic senators and wishing he wasn't. he said i am not going to u

with eleanor about the opposition to the nominee john hhagel. here is senator john mccain on "meet the press." >> we feel he will have the votes to be confirmed as the secretary of defense. i don't intend to give those up when other senators continue to have reasonable questions. i mean reasonable. >> you are not a yes vote for your old friend? >> no, i don't believe he is qualified. i don't believe we should hold up his nomination any further. >> can you tell me what is going on here, eleanor with this? we have a week delay and probably going to be confirmed. >> senator hagel supported barack obama over john mccain. i think it is very personal with mccain. i think with other republicans, they are looking ahead to the 2014 races and they don't want to be primaried from the right. they have to look tough here. in the end, they are saying he will get through. he will get through without perhaps any republican votes or a handful of republican votes. i don't think that say very good message to send to the rest of the world the politics the republicans are playing in this. mccain, he wants to hav

to be confirmed. one thing that's interesting, john mccain, remember, has said that he believes chuck hagel will be confirmed ultimately. john mccain, by the way, was not one of those senators who wrote that letter to the white house asking the president to withdraw chuck hagel's nomination. >> kristen welker e thanks so much with you and we'll check back with you later in the show. >> sounds good. >>> after nearly 40 years in public office, defense secretary leon panetta may have thought he'd be retired by now, but he thought wrong. panetta is still on the job. at a nato brussels in conference, a conference that was supposed to be intended by former senator chuck hagel. hagel has not taken the mantel as they blocked him heading out to recess. mallika henderson, political reporter at "the washington post" and john stanton, washington bureau chief, thank you both for being here. >> john, i want to start with you. citing panetta is not the man that the audience thought they'd be hearing from. does washington's ability portray any weakness to the international community? >> i don't know if it'

to once admire john mccain and bob kerry as a democrat for the same reasons. they are independent, and weren't bound to their party. they put the good of the nation above the party, willing to buck their party when they thought their party was wrong, like bob kerry did, like john mccain used to do, like chuck hagel did. couldn't it backfire them on this sense? he is going to be defense secretary. they are going to want stuff for him. they are going to want stuff for their district. they are going to want contracts for the district. they are going to want tours of the pentagon. chuck hagel is going to have a list of people who stabbed him in the back. right? >> right. they stabbed him in the front, i think. >> you are right. >> no screatus here yeah. thighs guys will -- i think that he probably sitting at how many today and over the president's day recess will be relishing the opportunity in the future should he have it to get these guys crawling back to him begging for help if there are base closures, contracts being handed out, and they will need to work

that applies today, so it got me wondering when i heard senator john mccain getting straight to the point this week. >> how do you convince the republicans about the path to citizenship? >> well, look, i will give you a little straight talk. look at the last election. look at the last election. we are losing dramatically the hispanic vote. >> so did senator mccain get the same memo? maybe he got the other memo, the one that sold all of the congressional memos to get with comprehensive immigration program. because language does matter and shift in immigration debate is one that we have all been long calling for and one that channels the speech for the real people about whom this political debate is about. seems that the republicans got one more memo since the 2012 election. there has not been just a change in speech happening. remember when was this acceptable speech coming from the senators two years ago? >> one of the issues that is often talked about, but never seriously discussed is the practice of allowing people to come here illegally and having a child and the child automatically gi
